Abstract
ABSTRACT This research is motivated by the proliferation of discourse on Islamic preaching (da'wah) by the Habaib in Indonesia, which has developed through digital media and religious public spaces. As it develops, some Islamic preaching narratives not only convey religious teachings but also create patterns of understanding that contain elements of religious mystification, such as the glorification of figures, exaggerated spiritual claims, anti-criticism, and the use of supernatural stories to legitimize religious authority. This phenomenon influences how society understands religion and accepts religious authority emotionally and symbolically. This study aims to analyze the forms of religious mystification in the discourse on Islamic preaching (da'wah) by the Habaib in Indonesia and to examine the religious narratives that have developed within society. The theories used in this study are Peter L. Berger's theory of mystification or reification and Mohammad Abid Al-Jabiri's theory of reasoning as analytical tools for understanding the construction of religious narratives and patterns of societal acceptance. This study employs a qualitative research method with a critical discourse analysis approach. Data sources were obtained from Habaib lecture videos on social media, particularly YouTube, as well as documentation related to the religious narratives that are the object of the study. Data collection techniques included digital observation, documentation, and recording of lecture narratives relevant to the research focus. Data analysis involved data reduction, classification, interpretation, and drawing conclusions based on the theoretical framework used in the study. The results indicate that some of the discourses of the Habaib preaching movement contain narratives containing elements of religious mystification through the cult of religious figures, spiritual legitimacy based on descent, claims of religious privilege, and the establishment of authority that tends to place religious figures outside the realm of criticism. These narratives create a pattern of diversity that emphasizes emotional, symbolic, and absolute obedience over critical rationality in understanding religious teachings.
