Abstract

ABSTRACT Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed the language learning process, particularly in translation courses. Currently, English Language Education students are increasingly using various AI-based applications to help them understand text content and produce translations more easily and efficiently. This study aims to determine how English Language Education students utilize AI in translation courses based on their experiences. The focus of this study includes the types of AI used, how they are used, and the advantages and disadvantages the students perceive during the translation process. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The participants in this study consisted of 15 sixth-semester students in the English Language Education Program at UIN Raden Intan Lampung, who were selected using purposive sampling. Sixth￾semester students were chosen because they had taken or were currently taking translation courses, namely Foundations of Translation, Translation Practice for Academic Contexts, and Translation Practice for Professional Contexts, which means that they already had experience using Artificial Intelligence (AI) both in the learning process and when completing translation assignments. This number of participants was considered adequate because qualitative research emphasizes the depth of data rather than the number of participants. Therefore, the information obtained was expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the students‟ experiences in accordance with the objectives of the study. All participants were also from the same cohort, ensuring that they had relatively similar learning experiences in the translation courses. The data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi￾structured interviews and were analyzed using the data analysis model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Soldana. The study‟s findings show that ChatGPT is the most widely used AI application because it is considered practical, easily accessible, and capable of providing more comprehensive explanations of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence context. In addition to ChatGPT, students also use Gemini, DeepL, Google Translate, Grok, Perplexity, Meta AI, and English Phonetics. AI is used to translate text, understand meaning in context, correct language structure, and help complete tasks more efficiently. On the other hand, iii the use of AI also has several limitations, such as the development of dependency, a decline in critical thinking skills, and translation results that are not always accurate. Therefore, AI should be used wisely and always accompanied by a verification process to ensure more accurate translations and to support the development of students‟ translation skills
