Abstract

ABSTRACT Speaking is one of the essential skills that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students need to develop to communicate effectively. However, many students have limited opportunities to practice speaking in authentic communication settings outside the classroom, which may hinder the development of their speaking fluency and speaking confidence. As an online video-chat platform, Ome TV provides opportunities for learners to engage in spontaneous conversations with people from different accents, cultures, and communication. therefore, this study aimed to explore students’ experiences in using Ome TV and investigate how the platform supported the enhancement of their speaking fluency and speaking confidence. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants were four English Education students selected through purposive sampling. A preliminary questionnaire was distributed to identify participants who met the research criteria. The data were collected through observations and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings revealed three major themes. First, students gained meaningful learning experiences through authentic communication with people from different countries, which increased their motivation to speak English. Second, OmeTV supported the enhancement of speaking fluency by encouraging continuous speech, improving the ability to manage communication breakdowns, and promoting more natural spoken interaction. Third, the platform enhanced speaking confidence by increasing self-confidence, reducing speaking anxiety, and providing positive speaking experiences through repeated real-time communication. These findings suggest that OmeTV provides meaningful opportunities for EFL students to practice English in authentic communication contexts while supporting the development of speaking fluency and speaking confidence
