Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is essential for daily communication and plays a crucial role in human life. People begin developing language skills from a young age, starting with just a single syllable. As they grow and receive visual cues from their parents, their language becomes more complex and refined. Both spoken and written language is vital for communication, although there may be instances where one form is clearer than the other. Misunderstandings can sometimes occur between speakers and listeners, leading to the need for clarification and further explanation of meaning. In semantic studies, this phenomenon is known as ambiguity. Sometimes, this circumstance does not only occur in a sentence, but it also can be happened cause by a single word. Ambiguity occurs when a word, phrase, or sentence possesses multiple meanings, causing the listener to consider various interpretations. At last, this phenomenon is called lexical ambiguity, in which When the ambiguity happens caused by a single word This research focuses on two objectives; 1.) Finding the lexical ambiguity in the movie dune part one 2.) To find out what kinds of lexical ambiguity found in the movie dune part one. This research used qualitative descriptive analysis, using the dialogue found in the script of the movie dune part one by denis villenueve. The data analysis of this research utilized according to miles and huberman, which divided into three part; data condensation, data display and drawing conclusions. Finally, to increase the validity of the data, the reasercher used investigative triangulation in which The validation was confirmed by an expert in the field related to the research. The result of the research revealed that researcher found the lexical ambiguity by using the theory discovered by M. Lynne Murphy, in which, out of the all dialogue uttered by the 3 atreides family (leto atreides, Jessica atredeis and Paul atreides), the researcher found 59 dialogues that contain lexical ambiguity. The researcher also found out all the types of lexical ambiguity according M. Murphy. Those are including the type of homonymy and polysemy.
