Abstract

ABSTRACT The use of animated series as a learning medium can provide students with opportunities to learn English vocabulary through simple, contextualized, and enjoyable language. However, students with limited vocabulary mastery may experience difficulties in understanding new words and maintaining concentration during the learning process. Therefore, the Strawberry Shortcake animated series was selected as the object of this research because it presents simple vocabulary, engaging storylines, characters, and contextualized language that can support vocabulary learning. This research discussed the advantages and challenges of using the Strawberry Shortcake animated series in teaching vocabulary at SMA Negeri 5 Metro. The objective of this research was to find out and describe the advantages and challenges of using the Strawberry Shortcake animated series in teaching vocabulary to students of Class X.7 at SMA Negeri 5 Metro. This research was qualitative with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Miles and Huberman. The sources of data were obtained from classroom observation, a semi-structured interview with the English teacher of Class X.7, and document analysis. In collecting the data, the researcher used an observation checklist to observe the vocabulary learning activities, an interview to obtain information about the teacher‟s experiences, and documents to support the findings. The data were classified according to the two research questions, namely the advantages of using the Strawberry Shortcake animated series in teaching vocabulary and the challenges encountered during the vocabulary learning process. From the data analysis, it was found that the Strawberry Shortcake animated series provided several advantages in teaching vocabulary, including simplifying vocabulary comprehension, supporting vocabulary understanding and retention, increasing students‟ motivation and interest, and providing safe and educational content. The challenges found in the research included differences in students‟ concentration and learning characteristics, difficulties in understanding unfamiliar vocabulary, and technical and classroomiii management problems such as unclear audio and classroom noise. The findings showed that the Strawberry Shortcake animated series played a positive role in supporting vocabulary learning by providing simple, contextualized, and engaging language input, although teacher guidance and classroom management were still needed to overcome the challenges.
