Abstract

ABSTRACT The increasing number of university students who work while pursuing their studies has become a common phenomenon in higher education. Working students are required to balance academic responsibilities and work commitments, which may influence their academic achievement. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in English academic achievement between working and non-working students in the Department of English Education at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. This study employed a quantitative approach with a comparative research design. The sample consisted of 100 students, including 50 working students and 50 non-working students, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and students‘ Grade Point Average (GPA) documentation. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability, resulting in 14 valid items out of 17 items and a Cronbach‘s Alpha coefficient of 0.931, indicating very high reliability. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, Levene‘s homogeneity test, and the Independent Samples t-test using SPSS version 25. The findings showed that the data were normally distributed, with significance values of 0.113 and 0.200, and the homogeneity test obtained a significance value of 0.099. The Independent Samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.148 (>0.05) with a mean difference of 0.04240. Thus, there was no significant difference in English academic achievement between working and non-working students. It can be concluded that employment status is not a significant factor affecting students‘ academic achievement. Instead, factors such as motivation, discipline, and time-management skills may play a more important role in supporting academic success.
