Abstract

ABSTRACT Listening is one of the essential language skills that plays an important role in English language learning. However, many students experience difficulties in understanding spoken English due to limited exposure to authentic language use. One of the ways to improve listening skills is through watching English movies, which provide authentic language input and expose students to real-life communication. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the correlation between students‟ habit of watching English movies and their listening skills among the eleventh-grade students of SMAN Bhakti Mulya Bunga Mayang in the academic year 2025/2026. The study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The population consisted of 127 students, from which a sample of 32 students was selected using cluster random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire to measure students‟ habits in watching English movies and a listening test to assess their listening skills. The collected data were then analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between students‟ habit of watching English movies and their listening skills. This suggested that students who watched English movies more frequently tended to achieve better listening performance. English movies provided authentic language input, allowing students to become familiar with real-life expressions, pronunciation, and various accents. This exposure helped improve their vocabulary and comprehension of spoken English in meaningful contexts. In conclusion, students‟ habit in watching English movies contributed positively to students‟ listening skill. Therefore, teachers were encouraged to use English movies as an effective and engaging learning medium to enhance students‟ listening skills.
