Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary mastery remains one of the major challenges faced by students in learning English. Many students have difficulty understanding, memorizing, and using vocabulary, particularly in narrative texts. In addition, conventional teaching methods often reduce students‟ interest and motivation in learning English. Therefore, engaging and interactive learning media are needed to help students improve their vocabulary mastery. Picture storybooks combine visual illustrations with meaningful stories, making vocabulary learning more interesting and easier to understand. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using picture storybooks on the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Hikmah Bandar Lampung. This study employed a quantitative method using a quasiexperimental design with pre-tests and post-tests in the experimental and control classes. The population consisted of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Hikmah Bandar Lampung. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling, resulting in one experimental class and one control class. The experimental class was taught using picture storybooks, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through vocabulary tests based on narrative texts administered before and after the treatment. The statistical analysis revealed a significant effect of using picture storybooks on students‟ vocabulary mastery. The Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.046, which was lower than 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Furthermore, students in the experimental class became more active, enthusiastic, and engaged because picture storybooks helped them understand new vocabulary through meaningful visual contexts. These findings contribute to the growing evidence that picture storybooks can serve as an effective instructional medium for teaching vocabulary in narrative texts, particularly for eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Hikmah Bandar Lampung.
