Abstract
Abstract This study aims to systematically synthesize the theoretical mechanisms that explain the relationship between academic stress and student mental health, and identify its implications for the development of Guidance and Counseling services in higher education. The study used a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design with a PRISMA based selection procedure for relevant articles in the 2020–2026 period. A total of 18 articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed through data extraction and narrative synthesis techniques. The results showed that academic stress was consistently significantly related to various mental health indicators, such as depression, anxiety, emotional distress, and languishing mental health conditions. This relationship was explained through mediation and moderation mechanisms involving sleep quality, physical activity, school belonging, self-efficacy, loneliness, and institutional and cultural factors. The findings also showed that academic stress not only impacts psychologically, but is also related to biological aspects and health behaviors. Overall, this study confirms that academic stress is an important determinant of student mental health that requires a preventive, holistic, and evidence-based approach in higher education services.
