Abstract

ABSTRACT Listening is one of the essential language skills in English learning; however, many EFL students still experience difficulties in understanding spoken English because of limited exposure to authentic audiovisual materials and low learning motivation. This study aimed to investigate whether the animated movie “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” was effective in improving the listening comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 29 Bandar Lampung. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 62 eighth-grade students, with 31 students in the experimental class and 31 students in the control class, selected through cluster random sampling. The research instrument was a listening test in the form of multiple-choice questions administered as the pre-test and post-test. Since the data were not normally distributed, the Mann-Whitney U test was employed to test the research hypothesis. The findings showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 65.40 to 80.08, while the control class increased from 65.56 to 73.06. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p = .018), indicating that the use of the animated movie significantly improved students' listening comprehension. Therefore, it can be concluded that The Mitchells vs. The Machines is an effective instructional medium for improving the listening comprehension of eighth-grade EFL students.
