Abstract

ABSTRACT ARTICLE INFO This study investigates the influence of using ChatGPT on students’ narrative writing skills at MTs N 1 Pesawaran. Although ChatGPT has been increasingly utilized in educational settings, studies examining its effectiveness in improving narrative writing skills among junior high school students in the Indonesian EFL context remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the use of ChatGPT significantly affects students’ narrative writing performance. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test in two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The participants were 67 ninth-grade students, consisting of 34 students in the experimental class and 33 students in the control class. The experimental class was taught narrative writing with the assistance of ChatGPT, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through writing tests and analyzed using normality, homogeneity, and independent samples t-test. The t-test result showed a significant difference between the two groups (t = 7.030, p < 0.05). These results suggest that ChatGPT can serve as an effective tool in enhancing students’ narrative writing skills, particularly in organizing ideas, developing vocabulary, and constructing coherent narrative texts.
