Abstract

Abstract Socio-Spiritual Dimensions of Hajj and Civil Society: Clifford Geertz Antrhopological Analysis This study aims to analyze the socio-spiritual dimensions of the Hajj pilgrimage and the construction of civil society values through the symbols of Hajj rituals from the perspective of Clifford Geertz’s symbolic anthropology. This is a qualitative study in the form of library research. Primary data sources consist of verses from the Qur’an, hadiths, and exegetical texts discussing Hajj rituals, while secondary data sources come from relevant books and scholarly articles. The results indicate that the symbols of Hajj rituals construct both the spiritual and social dimensions in an integrated manner. The symbol of ihram represents equality and the supremacy of law; thawaf fosters social participation and order; sa’i cultivates a work ethic and civic engagement; and wukuf reinforces pluralism and tolerance. From Clifford Geertz’s perspective, these symbols function as both a “model of reality” and a “model for reality,” internalizing the values of civil society into post-Hajj life. Thus, the Hajj not only shapes individual piety but also fosters a civilized social character. Keywords: Hajj symbolism, Clifford Geertz, symbolic anthropology theory, Civil Society. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis dimensi sosial spiritual ibadah haji serta konstruksi nilai-nilai masyarakat madani melalui simbol-simbol ritual haji dalam perspektif antropologi simbolik Clifford Geertz. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian kepustakaan (library research). Sumber data primer berupa ayat-ayat Al-Qur'an, hadis, dan kitab tafsir yang membahas ritual haji, sedangkan sumber data sekunder berasal dari buku dan artikel ilmiah yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa simbol-simbol ritual haji mengonstruksi dimensi spiritual dan sosial secara integratif. Simbol ihram merepresentasikan kesetaraan dan supremasi hukum, thawaf membangun partisipasi sosial dan keteraturan, sa'i menumbuhkan etos kerja serta civil engagement, sedangkan wukuf memperkuat pluralisme dan toleransi. Dalam perspektif Clifford Geertz, simbol simbol tersebut berfungsi sebagai model of reality sekaligus model for reality yang menginternalisasikan nilai-nilai masyarakat madani ke dalam kehidupan pascahaji. Dengan demikian, haji tidak hanya membentuk kesalehan individual, tetapi juga karakter sosial yang berkeadaban.
