Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the types and levels of code mixing used in Boy William’s YouTube videos. Code mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon in bilingual or multilingual societies, including Indonesia, where speakers frequently combine two languages in a single utterance. Along with the rapid development of social media, especially YouTube, code mixing increasingly appears in digital communication. Boy William, as a bilingual public figure, often mixes Indonesian and English in his videos, making his YouTube channel an interesting object of sociolinguistic study. This research employed a qualitative research design using content analysis. The data were obtained from two videos on Boy William’s YouTube channel, namely “Nebeng Boy with Atta Halilintar” and “Nebeng Boy with Chef Renatta Moeloek.” The data collection techniques involved downloading the videos, transcribing the utterances, identifying expressions of code mixing, and classifying them based on Hoffman’s theory of types of code mixing and Suwito’s theory of levels of code mixing. The findings reveal three types of code mixing: intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and code mixing involving a change of pronunciation. In the first video, intra-sentential code mixing dominates with 81%, followed by intra-lexical code mixing at 13.5% and change of pronunciation at 5.4%. In the second video, intra-sentential code mixing is also dominant at 91%, while intra-lexical code mixing accounts for 6% and change of pronunciation for 3%. Furthermore, six levels of code mixing were identified: word level, phrase level, repetition word level, idiom level, baster level, and clause level. In the first video, the highest percentage appears at the phrase level (26.7%), followed by clause level (20%) and word level (15.6%). In contrast, the second video shows that word level is the most dominant level with 36.4%, followed by phrase level at 27.3% and clause level at 21.2%. In conclusion, the results indicate that intra-sentential code mixing is the most frequently used type in both videos, while the dominant level of code mixing varies depending on the video context. This phenomenon reflects Boy William’s bilingual background and the informal conversational setting of the videos. This study contributes to sociolinguistic research and provides insights into the use of code mixing in digital media
