Abstract

ABSTRACT Title: The Influence of TikTok Application Towards Students' Reading Comprehension of Tenth Grade Students at SMK Kautsar Way Sulan Academic Year 2024/2025 Reading comprehension is one of the most essential skills in learning English because it enables students to understand, interpret, and evaluate written information effectively. However, many students still experience difficulties in comprehending English texts due to limited vocabulary, low learning motivation, and the use of conventional teaching methods. In the era of Society 5.0, integrating technology into the learning process has become an important strategy to improve students' engagement and academic achievement. One of the most popular social media platforms among students is TikTok, which provides short educational videos that can be utilized as an innovative learning medium. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the influence of the TikTok application on students' reading comprehension and to determine whether the use of the TikTok program could improve students' motivation and proficiency in learning English. This research employed a quantitative research method using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study consisted of the tenth-grade students of SMK Kautsar Way Sulan in the Academic Year 2024/2025. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling and consisted of 30 students. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test administered before and after the treatment, supported by classroom observation to describe the students' learning participation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test to determine the significance of the treatment. The findings indicated that the implementation of the TikTok application had a positive and significant influence on students' reading comprehension. The students demonstrated better understanding of English texts after participating in learning activities through educational TikTok videos. Their post-test scores were higher than their pre-test scores, indicating a noticeable improvement in reading comprehension achievement. In addition, students showed greater motivation, enthusiasm, confidence, and active participation during the learning process. The statistical analysis revealed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was lower than 0.05, indicating thatiii the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. These findings confirmed that the use of TikTok as a learning medium significantly improved students' reading comprehension and English learning proficiency. In conclusion, the TikTok application is an effective and innovative instructional medium for teaching reading comprehension in English classrooms. The integration of short educational videos, visual learning, authentic language exposure, and interactive activities creates an enjoyable learning environment that enhances students' motivation, engagement, and academic performance. Therefore, English teachers are recommended to integrate the TikTok application into classroom instruction as an alternative digital learning medium, particularly in the Society 5.0 era, to improve students' reading comprehension, learning motivation, and overall English proficiency.
