Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to determine whether there was a significant effect of Multimodal Game-Based Learning (MGBL) on students’ mastery of the simple past tense through recount texts at the eighth grade of MTs Darul Huda Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2025/2026. The study was conducted because many students had difficulties in understanding and using the simple past tense correctly, while conventional teaching methods often provided limited student engagement. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasiexperimental design, specifically the Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students of MTs Darul Huda Bandar Lampung. Class VIII C was selected as the experimental class and class VIII D as the control class, with 25 students in each class. The experimental class was taught using MGBL, while the control class received conventional instruction. Data were collected through multiple-choice pre-test and post-test instruments. The findings showed that the mean score of the experimental class increased from 29.20 in the pre-test to 66.60 in the post-test, while the control class improved from 27.60 to 46.40. The result of the Independent Samples t-test revealed that the significance value (Sig. 2- tailed) was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. These findings indicate that Multimodal Game-Based Learning had a significant effect on students’ mastery of the simple past tense through recount texts and helped create a more engaging learning environment.
