Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of English language learning; however, many students still encounter difficulties in understanding word meanings and applying vocabulary appropriately in context. These challenges often result in low vocabulary mastery and limited comprehension skills. To address this issue, the Context Clues Strategy was introduced as an effective teaching approach that encourages students to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words through contextual information. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the influence of Context Clues Strategy towards vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 1 Jati Agung in the academic year of 2026/2027. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this study, involving two classes: VIII A as the experimental class and VIII B as the control class, with a total of 62 students. The experimental class was taught using the Context Clue Strategy, while the control class received conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests, each consisting of 25 multiple-choice items, to measure students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. The data were analyzed using SPSS, including tests of normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing. The findings showed that the data fulfilled the assumptions for statistical analysis. The normality test indicated significance values greater than 0.05, while the homogeneity test produced a significance value of 0.387, which was also higher than 0.05, indicating that the data were homogeneous. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing revealed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.003, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Context Clues Strategy had a significant influence towards vocabulary mastery at SMP Negeri 1 Jati Agung.
