Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to explore the questioning strategies used by teacher to foster English-speaking skills at Al-Azhar Senior High School 3 Bandar Lampung. English speaking skill is essential for students, but many still struggle due to a lack of confidence, vocabulary, and engagement in classroom activities. To address this issue, teachers employ various questioning strategies to encourage students to participate actively in discussions, think critically, and improve their speaking fluency. This research adopted a qualitative approach, employing interviews and observations to collect data. The findings indicate that teachers utilize different questioning techniques, such as open-ended questions, probing questions, and reflective questions, to stimulate students’ responses. The study also identifies the advantages and challenges of applying questioning strategies in the classroom. The results suggest that effective questioning strategies can significantly enhance students' speaking confidence and engagement. However, some challenges remain, such as students' hesitation to respond and varying language proficiency levels. This study provides insights for English teachers on how to optimize questioning strategies to create a more interactive and supportive learning environment.
