Abstract

ABSTRACT Self-confidence is an important factor in developing students’ English-speaking ability and is closely related to self-efficacy. Students with higher self-efficacy tend to be more confident in expressing their ideas and participating in speaking activities. Therefore, this study aims to explore students’ self-confidence in English speaking from the perspective of self-efficacy theory. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 25 university students as participants. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire consisting of close-ended and openended questions distributed via Google Forms. The data were analyzed thematically by categorizing students’ responses into four dimensions of self-efficacy: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional and physiological states. The findings indicate that mastery experiences play a significant role in enhancing students’ confidence through successful speaking experiences and regular practice. Vicarious experiences, such as observing peers and teachers, increase confidence by providing motivation and positive role models. Verbal persuasion from teachers, friends, and family encourages students to feel more confident and reduces their fear of making mistakes. Moreover, emotional and physiological states, including anxiety, nervousness, and stress, affect students’ confidence, while effective emotional regulation supports better speaking performance. Overall, students’ self-confidence in English speaking is influenced by both internal and external factors related to self-efficacy. These findings suggest that educators should create supportive learning environments that promote students’ confidence and encourage active participation in English-speaking activities.
