Abstract

Abstract: study examines the implementation of the Language Ex This study examined how the Scientific Approach was applied to address students’ speaking anxiety at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Bandar Lampung. Speaking anxiety is a common barrier in English learning, especially when students must speak in front of peers. Using a qualitative case study design, the research involved one English teacher and five purposively selected ninth-grade students. Data were gathered through observation and interviews and analyzed following Miles and Huberman’s model: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions.Findings showed that students’ anxiety stemmed from fear of making mistakes, worry about negative evaluation, limited vocabulary, pronunciation challenges, and low selfconfidence. Implementing the Scientific Approach through observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating helped reduce anxiety over time. Observation activities gave students clear examples before speaking; questioning improved comprehension; group discussions boosted confidence; and communication tasks allowed practice in a supportive classroom. The teacher’s use of positive feedback, group work, games, and ice-breakers also helped lower anxiety. Overall, the Scientific Approach proved effective in increasing students’ confidence and comfort when speaking English.
