Abstract
The development of digital media has transformed the way religion is represented, communicated, and consumed in contemporary society. In digital spaces, religious symbols no longer function solely as vehicles for conveying spiritual values but have increasingly become integrated into digital economic activities. This condition gives rise to the phenomenon of the commodification of religion, a process through which religious symbols are utilized as sources of economic value within various forms of digital communication and marketing practices. This study aims to analyze the forms of commodification of religious symbols in digital spaces and to explain how the meanings of religious symbols shift from the spiritual sphere to the economic sphere. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The primary data consist of TikTok content documenting the representation of religious symbols, particularly the symbols of hijrah, syar’i, and Qur’anic murottal recitations. Secondary data were obtained from books, scholarly journals, academic articles, and other relevant literature related to the research topic. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Roland Barthes’ Semiotic Theory was employed as the primary analytical framework to examine denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings, while Vincent Mosco’s Commodification Theory was used to explain the transformation of religious meanings into economic value. The findings reveal that the commodification of religion in digital spaces occurs through the utilization of religious symbols that possess strong social legitimacy and symbolic value within Muslim society. The symbol of hijrah is represented as a visual identity of the modern Muslim, the symbol of syar’i functions as a marker of moral legitimacy and a means of building consumer trust, while Qur’anic murottal recitations are represented as symbols of tranquility and blessing that enhance the appeal of commercial products. Semiotic analysis demonstrates that the shift in the meaning of religious symbols occurs through the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth before eventually becoming commodified. From the perspective of political economy of communication, these religious symbols undergo a transformation from use value to exchange value, enabling them to function as sources of economic value within digital marketing activities. This study concludes that the phenomenon observed is not merely the commodification of religion in general, but more specifically the commodification of religious meaning, namely the process through which the symbolic meanings attached to religious symbols are reproduced and converted into economic value within the digital media ecosystem.
