Abstract
ABSTRACT Social values are essential elements of public discourse because they influence how audiences perceive ethical responsibility, humanitarian awareness, and sustainable social action. One medium through which social values are effectively communicated is TED Talk, which combines persuasive language with meaningful messages. This study aims to analyze the representation of social values in Dan Iversen‘s TED Talk entitled “Social Value Creation: An Opportunity of a Lifetime” through denotative and connotative meanings as well as language variation according to use. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data consisted of utterances taken from the transcript of Dan Iversen‘s TED Talk published on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using Geoffrey Leech‘s theory of denotative and connotative meaning and Ronald Wardhaugh‘s theory of language variation, focusing on functional style, variety, and register. To ensure the trustworthiness of the findings, researcher triangulation was applied through validation by an expert validator. The findings reveal that the speech represents three dominant analytical categories of social values: Ethical Social Value, Humanitarian–Community Social Value, and Action-Oriented and Sustainable Social Value. Ethical social value is represented through morality, honesty, integrity, responsibility, and authenticity. Humanitarian–community social value is reflected in empathy, cooperation, solidarity, social welfare, and concern for others. Actionoriented and sustainable social value is represented through action, innovation, social impact, and sustainability. Furthermore, the analysis shows that denotative meaning conveys explicit messages, while connotative meaning communicates deeper moral and ideological meanings. In terms of language variation, the speech predominantly employs functional style and register, whereas no significant variety was identified.
