Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to investigate the correlation between students’ vocabulary Mastery and their listening comprehension at the eighth grade of MTs NU Negara Batin in the academic year 2025/2026. The study was conducted based on the assumption that vocabulary Mastery contributes significantly to students’ ability to understand spoken English. This research employed a quantitative correlational design. The population consisted of eighth-grade students of MTs NU Negara Batin, with 90 students selected as the sample. The data were collected through vocabulary and listening comprehension tests in the form of multiple-choice questions. The vocabulary test measured students’ understanding of word forms, meanings, and word use in context, while the listening test assessed their ability to identify main ideas, find specific information, make inferences, and predict information from spoken texts. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a normality test, and Spearman Rank Correlation. The findings revealed that the mean score of students’ vocabulary Mastery was 60.75, while the mean score of listening comprehension was 58.71. Since the vocabulary data were not normally distributed, Spearman Rank Correlation was applied. The analysis showed a correlation coefficient of 0.789 with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant and strong positive correlation between the two variables. In conclusion, students with higher vocabulary Mastery tended to achieve better listening comprehension.
