Abstract

Abstract: This study is of significant relevance in uncovering the motivations of middle-aged and elderly individuals to participate in activities at the Al-Hidayah Majlis Taklim, whilst also making an academic contribution to research on the relationship between religiosity, social needs and psychological well-being in these age groups. This study aims to describe the forms of religious motivation that drive congregants’ involvement in Majlis Taklim activities, whilst analysing the role of the Majlis Taklim in meeting the spiritual, social and psychological needs of its members. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach through field observation and in-depth interviews, with analysis drawing on Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, specifically the generativity versus stagnation stage in middle age and the ego integrity versus despair stage in old age. The findings indicate that the participation of congregants aged 45–65 is influenced by a decline in productive activities, the emergence of feelings of loneliness, and a growing awareness of the spiritual dimension and life after death. These conditions encourage them to deepen their religious practices as a means of attaining inner peace, strengthening their relationship with God, and rediscovering the meaning of life in their twilight years. The main findings of this study indicate that religious study groups serve not only as spaces for religious learning but also as social communities that provide. The main findings of this study indicate that majelis taklim serve not only as spaces for religious learning, but also as social communities that provide emotional support, a sense of belonging, and a social support network that are vital to the social, psychological and spiritual well-being of members in middle age and later life. Keyword: majelis taklim;social and spiritual psychology motivation.
