Abstract
ABSTRACT This study is motivated by the water crisis threat in Sleman caused by groundwater exploitation in the domestic (70%) and industrial (90%) sectors, which is exacerbated by the public's negative stigma toward rainwater. This study aims to evaluate how the Kenduri Banyu Udan Tradition by the Banyu Bening Community internalizes Islamic eco-theology to promote environmental conservation. Employing a qualitative method, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with six key informants (community administrators, religious figures, customary leaders, and local residents). The results show a unique convergence between cultural performativity and the three pillars of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' eco-theology (care, responsibility, and damage mitigation) socially constructed through sacred legitimation to elevate rainwater into a sacred object of faith. Nevertheless, sociocultural barriers in the form of skepticism regarding rainwater quality continue to impede the expansion of public participation. This study concludes that the religious-cultural based da'wah strategy successfully forms an ecologicalnomos that shifts the public paradigm from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism, bridging ritual piety with real ecological responsibility for the common good. The novelty of this research lies in its success in positioning rainwater harvesting as a community-based theo-cultural movement in the interior of Java. Keywords: Ecocentrism, Islamic Ecotheology, Kenduri Banyu Udan.
