Abstract

ABSTRACT Translation is an important skill for students of the English Education Department, as it enables them to transfer meaning accurately from English into Indonesian. Understanding translation methods is essential to ensure that the message of the source text is conveyed naturally and appropriately in the target language. Therefore, this research aims to describe the translation s applied by the students of the English Education Department at Raden Intan State Islamic University in translating English texts into Indonesian and to analyze how these methods are reflected based on Peter Newmark’s translation theory. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the research were five fifth-semester students of the English Education Department selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected through interviews that explored students’ understanding, application, and considerations in using translation methods. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed using the qualitative data analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the research indicate that the students applied several translation methods, including literal translation, communicative translation, and free translation, depending on the type of text, context, and target readers. The findings also show that students tend to balance faithfulness to the source text with naturalness in the target language, although they still experience difficulties related to unfamiliar vocabulary, structural differences between English and Indonesian, and decision-making in selecting appropriate methods. It can be concluded that the students demonstrate a basic understanding of translation methods; however, further practice and deeper theoretical knowledge are needed to enhance their translation competence.
