Abstract

ABSTRACT Vocabulary mastery is a crucial component in learning English, where the use of digital media such as the Simpler application is expected to facilitate interactive student learning. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using Simpler Apps on the English vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP N 3 Belitang Mulya in the 2025/2026 academic year. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample was selected through a cluster random sampling technique, dividing the students into an experimental class that used Simpler Apps and a control class that applied a conventional method. Data were collected through pretest and post-test instruments to measure the understanding of word meanings and word usage. The results of the data analysis using an independent sample ttest showed a significance value of 0.730 (p > 0.05), with the mean post-test score of the experimental class (73.78) being nearly identical to that of the control class (73.31). The discussion of these findings indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted, meaning there is no significant difference between the two classes as both methods provided comparable improvements. In conclusion, the use of Simpler Apps does not have a significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery when compared to the textbook-based conventional learning method. As a suggestion, English teachers can utilize this application as a supplementary media variation outside of class hours, while future researchers are expected to examine the effectiveness of this application on different language skills with a longer treatment duration.
