Abstract

ABSTRACT STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF GOOGLE TRANSLATE IN TRANSLATING TEXT AT THE SIXTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UIN RADEN INTAN LAMPUNG By Nurma Chena The rapid development of information and communication technology has encouraged the widespread use of machine translation tools, such as Google Translate, among university students in completing academic tasks, including in the Translation course. Although Google Translate offers convenience and time efficiency, excessive dependence on this tool raises concerns about hindering students' independent language development, particularly in vocabulary mastery, grammatical competence, and contextual understanding. This research aims to find out the perceptions of sixth-semester students of the English Education Department at UIN Raden Intan Lampung toward the use of Google Translate in translating texts. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method. The population consisted of all 90 sixth-semester students of the English Education Department in the 2025/2026 academic year, using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 20 statement items based on four theoretical dimensions: Perceived Ease of Use (Davis, 1989), Translation Accuracy and Quality (Larson, 1984), Impact on Learning (Warschauer, 1996), and Overall Perception (Walgito, 2020), supported by semi-structured interviews with 10 students. After validity and reliability testing, 18 items were declared valid with a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.955 (highly reliable), and the questionnaire was completed by 83 respondents. The data were analyzed using mean and percentage formulas and categorized based on a score interpretation table. The results show that sixth-semester students hold a positive perception toward the use of Google Translate in translating texts, with an overall average of 78.1%. The Perceived Ease of Use dimension obtained the highest percentage (79.4%), followed by Impact on Learning (78.4%), Overall Perception (77.8%), and Translation Accuracy and Quality with the lowest percentage (76.8%). These findings indicate that students consider Google Translate easy to use, practical, and helpful in the learning process, particularly in enriching vocabulary and speeding up text comprehension. The interview results reinforce the questionnaire findings, where students stated that Google Translate is useful as a supporting tool but still requires critical evaluation of its output. Based on these findings, it is suggested that students use Google Translate wisely as a learning aid rather than as a substitute for their own language skills.
