Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh adanya ketegangan konseptual antara pemahaman ummah sebagai konsep teologis yang bersifat universal dengan realitas keberagamaan Islam Nusantara yang berkembang dalam konteks sosial dan budaya lokal. Sebagian besar kajian terdahulu masih menempatkan ummah pada ranah normatif teologis, sehingga belum banyak menjelaskan bagaimana konsep tersebut direinterpretasi dalam kehidupan sosial masyarakat Muslim yang majemuk. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap proses reinterpretasi makna teologis konsep ummah menuju makna sosiologis dalam Islam Nusantara melalui teori Double Movement Fazlur Rahman, serta menjelaskan relevansi dan implikasi filosofis dari reinterpretasi tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian kepustakaan (library research) dan bersifat deskriptif-analitis. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan filosofis-hermeneutis. Sumber data primer berupa ayat-ayat Al-Qur‟an tentang ummah, khususnya Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 143 dan 213 serta Q.S. Ali „Imran [3]: 104 dan 110, serta literatur mengenai Islam Nusantara. Analisis dilakukan menggunakan teori Double Movement Fazlur Rahman melalui dua tahap, yaitu rekonstruksi konteks historis untuk menemukan ideal moral ayat, kemudian mengontekstualisasikan ideal moral tersebut ke dalam realitas Islam Nusantara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa makna ummah dalam Al-Qur‟an tidak hanya menunjuk pada komunitas teologis yang dipersatukan oleh akidah, tetapi juga mengandung ideal moral berupa moderasi (wasathiyyah), persatuan kemanusiaan, tanggung jawab sosial, dakwah, amar ma‟ruf nahi munkar, serta kontribusi bagi kemaslahatan bersama. Melalui gerakan kedua Double Movement, ideal moral tersebut menemukan relevansinya dalam Islam Nusantara sebagai ekspresi sosiologis ummah yang mengaktualisasikan nilai-nilai universal Islam melalui penghormatan terhadap budaya lokal tanpa mengubah prinsip-prinsip akidah dan syariat. Dengan demikian, Islam Nusantara dipahami bukan sebagai penyimpangan dari ummah universal, melainkan sebagai manifestasi kontekstual dari nilai-nilai ummah dalam masyarakat Indonesia yang majemuk. Secara filosofis, reinterpretasi ini memperluas pemahaman ummah dari dimensi teologis menuju dimensi sosiologis yang bersifat komplementer, sehingga menghasilkan konsep ummah yang lebih inklusif, kontekstual, dan tetap berlandaskan nilai-nilai Al-Qur‟an. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa konsep ummah dalam Islam Nusantara merupakan reinterpretasi dari makna teologis menuju makna sosiologis tanpa menghilangkan dimensi normatif Al-Qur‟an. Islam Nusantara dipahami sebagai manifestasi kontekstual dari nilai nilai universal ummah yang diwujudkan melalui moderasi, penghargaan terhadap keragaman, persatuan, dan tanggung jawab sosial. Reinterpretasi tersebut memperluas pemahaman ummah menjadi konsep yang bersifat inklusif, kontekstual, dan tetap berlandaskan nilai-nilai universal Islam. ABSTRACT This study is motivated by the conceptual tension between the understanding of ummah as a universal theological concept and the socio-cultural reality of Islam Nusantara as a localized expression of Islam. Previous studies have predominantly examined ummah from a normative and theological perspective, while limited attention has been given to its reinterpretation within the context of contemporary Muslim social life. Therefore, this study aims to examine the reinterpretation of the theological meaning of ummah into a sociological meaning within Islam Nusantara through Fazlur Rahman‟s Double Movement theory, as well as to analyze the relevance and philosophical implications of this reinterpretation. This research employs a qualitative library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach. It adopts a philosophical hermeneutic perspective. The primary sources consist of Qur‟anic verses concerning ummah, particularly Q.S. Al-Baqarah [2]: 143 and 213, and Q.S. Ali „Imran [3]: 104 and 110, along with major references on Islam Nusantara. Data were analyzed using Fazlur Rahman‟s Double Movement theory through two stages: reconstructing the historical context of the Qur‟anic verses to identify their moral ideals and subsequently contextualizing those moral ideals within the contemporary reality of Islam Nusantara. The findings reveal that the concept of ummah in the Qur‟an does not merely refer to a theological community united by faith but also embodies universal moral ideals, including moderation (wasatiyyah), human unity, social responsibility, da‟wah, amar ma‟ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil), and commitment to the common good. Through the second movement of Fazlur Rahman‟s theory, these moral ideals are contextualized in Islam Nusantara as a sociological manifestation of ummah that actualizes the universal values of Islam through appreciation of local culture without compromising the principles of Islamic faith and Sharia. Consequently, Islam Nusantara should be understood not as a deviation from the universal ummah, but as a contextual expression of its values within Indonesia‟s pluralistic society. Philosophically, this reinterpretation expands the understanding of ummah from a purely theological dimension to a complementary sociological dimension, resulting in a concept of ummah that is more inclusive, contextual, and firmly grounded in the moral values of the Qur‟an. This study concludes that the concept of ummah in Islam Nusantara represents a reinterpretation from a theological to a sociological meaning without diminishing the Qur‟an‟s normative dimension. Islam Nusantara is understood as a contextual manifestation of the universal values of ummah, expressed through moderation, respect for diversity, social cohesion, and collective responsibility. This reinterpretation broadens the understanding of ummah into an inclusive and contextual concept while remaining firmly grounded in the universal values of Islam.
