Abstract

ABSTRACT Being able to read does not always mean being able to understand. Many EFL learners still have difficulties in comprehending recount texts, highlighting the importance of implementing effective reading strategies in the classoom. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the influence of the Preview, Ask Questions, Read and Summarize (PAQRS) Strategy on students‟ reading comprehension at SMAN 13 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasiexperimental design. The population of this research was the students of SMAN 13 Bandar Lampung. The sample consisted of two classes, namely 30 students in the experimental class and 24 students in the control class. The experimental class was taught by using Preview, Ask Questions, Read, and Summarize (PAQRS) Strategy, while the control class was taught by using Interactive Reading Strategy. The treatment was conducted in three meetings for each class. In collecting the data, this research used a multiple-choice reading comprehension test which had been tried out and analyzed for its validity and reliability before being administered. The test consisted of 24 items for the pre-test and 24 items for the post-test. Before conducting the treatment, a pre-test was administered to both classes. After the treatment, a post-test was administered. The data were analyzed using SPSS. The normality test revealed that the gain score data of both the control class (Sig. = 0.000) and the experimental class (Sig. = 0.012) were not normally distributed (Sig. < 0.05). Meanwhile, the homogeneity test showed that the data were homogeneous (Sig. = 0.872 > 0.05). Therefore, the data were analyzed using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U Test. Based on the result of the Mann-Whitney U Test, the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. It can be concluded that the use of the Preview, Ask Questions, Read, and Summarize (PAQRS) Strategy influenced students‟ reading comprehension achievement in recount texts among EFL learners at SMAN 13 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2025/2026. It is recommended that future researchers investigate theiii effectiveness of the PAQRS Strategy in different text genres, with larger sample sizes, or over a longer treatment period to provide broader evidence of its effectiveness in improving students‟ reading comprehension.
