Abstract

ABSTRACT Early reading ability is a fundamental skill that elementary school students must acquire, as it serves as the foundation for understanding various learning materials. However, the reading literacy level of Indonesian students remains relatively low, indicating the need for more effective instructional methods to improve early reading skills. This study aimed to analyze the role of teachers in implementing the Structural Analytic Synthetic (SAS) method and to examine the effectiveness of the SAS method in improving early reading skills among elementary school students. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using a descriptive-narrative approach. The literature search was conducted using the Publish or Perish application through the Google Scholar and Scopus databases. The selected studies were screened based on the PRISMA guidelines and predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of the 608 articles initially identified, 17 studies met the eligibility criteria and were analyzed using Narrative Synthesis. The findings indicate that the SAS method effectively improves students' early reading skills, including letter recognition, syllable reading, word reading, simple sentence reading, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. The successful implementation of the SAS method is also supported by teachers who create active, systematic, and meaningful learning experiences through the use of various instructional media. Therefore, the SAS method can be considered an effective instructional alternative for improving early reading skills and strengthening literacy among elementary school students.
