Abstract

ABSTRACT Students' descriptive text writing ability is still one of the challenges in English language learning, particularly in developing ideas, organizing text structure, and using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, an appropriate teaching strategy is needed to help students improve their writing ability. This research aimed to investigate the influence of the Color-Coding Strategy on students' descriptive text writing ability. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasiexperimental design conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Bunga Mayang. The sample consisted of 64 eighth-grade students divided into an experimental class and a control class, with 32 students in each class. The experimental class was taught using the Color-Coding Strategy, while the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. The data were collected using a descriptive text writing test administered as a pre-test and post-test. Students' writing was assessed using Brown's (2001) writing rubric and analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and the Mann-Whitney U Test. The findings showed that the experimental class obtained a higher mean post-test score (71.16) than the control class (55.72). The results of the Mann-Whitney U Test showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (U = 19.000, Z = -6.679, p < 0.001). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted, indicating that the Color-Coding Strategy had a significant influence on students' descriptive text writing ability. These findings indicate that the Color-Coding Strategy is effective in improving students' descriptive text writing ability and can be used as an alternative strategy for teaching descriptive writing.Therefore, the Color-Coding Strategy can be considered an effective strategy for improving students' descriptive text writing ability.
