Abstract

ABSTRACT English teaching continues to evolve as teachers navigate between long-established practices and newer, student-centered approaches. However, many classrooms still rely heavily on traditional techniques, while the shift toward modern methods remains inconsistent. This gap raises questions about how English teachers choose and implement teaching strategies in real practice. Therefore, this study investigates the use of traditional and modern teaching methods by English teachers at SMP IT Al-Farabi, focusing on what methods are applied and why teachers choose them. This research used a descriptive qualitative design to produce an indepth analysis of teaching practices. The participants were the English teachers and eighth-grade students at SMP IT Al-Farabi. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The data were then analyzed to identify specific methods, patterns of implementation, and the underlying reasoning behind teachers’ choices. The findings show that teachers consistently combine both traditional and modern approaches. Traditional methods—such as GrammarTranslation, textbook-based instruction, drilling, and teacher-centered explanation—are used to strengthen students’ grammatical accuracy and support exam preparation. Modern methods—such as Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Learning, group work, project-based learning, and multimedia integration—are applied to increase student engagement, develop communicative competence, and support real-world language application. Teachers’ decisions are influenced by curriculum demands, time limitations, student readiness, and resource availability. Despite challenges, the blended use of traditional and modern methods helps create a more balanced learning environment that supports both accuracy and fluency.
