Abstract

Abstract The Qur’an functions not only as a book of guidance, but also as a model of divine communication rich in rhetorical, persuasive, and dialogical ethical values. One form of such communication is reflected in the dialogue between Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) and his people, which contains rational, emotional, and argumentative strategies of da‘wah. This study is motivated by the limited number of studies specifically discussing the rhetoric of Prophet Hud’s dialogue from the perspective of Sayyid Qutb’s Tafsir Fī Ẓhilāl al-Qur’ān, as well as its relevance to contemporary amidst the phenomena of polarization, intolerance, and the crisis of public communication ethics. This study aims to analyze the forms and characteristics of the rhetoric in Prophet Hud’s dialogue with his people and its relevance to contemporary dialogical practices. This study employed a qualitative method with a library research approach. The primary data sources consisted of the Qur'an and Fī Ẓhilāl al-Qur’ān by Sayyid Qutb, while the secondary data were obtained from books, scholarly journals, and relevant literature on rhetoric, prophetic communication, and Qur'anic exegesis. The data were analyzed using content analysis, thematic analysis, and relevance analysis. The findings reveal that the rhetoric of Prophet Hud's dialogue is constructed through the rhetoric of tawḥīd (Islamic monotheism), rational argumentation, gradual and proportional warnings, and a problem-solving approach that reflects persuasive, courteous, and principle-oriented communication. Furthermore, the study finds that the communicative values embodied in Prophet Hud's dialogue remain highly relevant for contemporary application by preachers, educators, community leaders, public officials, and digital media users in fostering communication that is humane, rational, ethical, and constructive amid the dynamics of modern society.
