Abstract

ABSTRACT THE EFFECT OF WATCHING MOVIES WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLE TOWARD STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION AT SMAN 17 BANDAR LAMPUNG Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill in learning English, yet many eleventh-grade students at SMAN 17 Bandar Lampung still struggle to understand texts and vocabulary. This issue is partly caused by the limited use of engaging learning media in the classroom. To overcome this problem, movies with English subtitles were used as an alternative medium because they combine visual and written information that supports students’ understanding. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the significant effect of watching movies with English subtitles on students’ reading comprehension. This research used a quantitative method with a quasi experimental design involving an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class was taught using English-subtitled movies, while the control class received conventional instruction. Both groups completed pretest and post-test assessments, and the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The result showed an asymptotic significance value of 0.002, indicating that English-subtitled movies had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. The findings showed that the experimental class achieved higher scores than the control class, indicating better improvement in reading ability. The combination of visual scenes and subtitles helped students understand texts more easily and increased their motivation to learn. Supported by Dual Coding Theory, this study concludes that watching movies with English subtitles is an effective strategy for improving students’ reading comprehension.
