Abstract

ABSTRACT Storytelling is one of the teaching methods used in English speaking classes to encourage students to express ideas, improve confidence, and develop communication skills. However, many students still experience difficulties during storytelling activities, such as nervousness, limited vocabulary, pronunciation problems, and fear of making mistakes. Therefore, this study aimed to explore students’ experiences and attitudes toward the storytelling method in English speaking class at MTs GUPPI Natar. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants consisted of ten students and one English teacher at MTs GUPPI Natar. The data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students experienced several challenges during storytelling activities, including nervousness, limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and lack of confidence. Despite these challenges, storytelling helped students become more active, confident, and engaged in speaking activities. The findings also showed that students had positive attitudes toward storytelling because it was considered enjoyable, interactive, and beneficial for improving speaking ability, vocabulary mastery, and classroom participation. In conclusion, storytelling can be regarded as an effective and engaging method that supports positive speaking experiences and attitudes in English learning.
