Abstract

Abstract The phenomenon of waithood, or the postponement of marriage among Generation Z, has become increasingly prevalent alongside contemporary economic and social transformations. Previous discussions of waithood have largely focused on social and psychological dimensions, such as shifts in young people‘s mindsets and changing meanings of marriage. However, studies from the perspective of Islamic family law remain limited, particularly those that contextualize economic factors as a primary consideration in Generation Z‘s decision to delay marriage. In fact, financial readiness and economic stability constitute significant reasons for postponing marriage. This research aims to address two main questions (1) What factors cause Generation Z to choose waithood at UIN Raden Intan Lampung and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University? and (2) How does Islamic family law view the phenomenon of waithood among Generation Z at these institutions? This study is field research employing a comparative qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 informants, consisting of 10 master‘s students and 5 lecturers. The data were analyzed descriptively using Jasser Auda‘s theory of maqasid alshariah as the analytical framework. The findings indicate that waithood among Generation Z at UIN Raden Intan Lampung and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University is influenced by economic, socio-cultural, psychological, and digital media factors. Economically, marriage is postponed due to job instability, the need for higher educational qualifications, and the pursuit of long-term financial stability. Socially, although cultural norms continue to regard marriage as a marker of adulthood, Generation Z tends to adopt a more reflective and unhurried attitude. Moreover, the gap between the idealized image and the social reality of marriage, combined with exposure to information through social media, fosters a critical awareness that marriage requires comprehensive physical and emotional readiness. Thus, waithood does not represent a rejection of marriage but rather a rational strategy to achieve greater preparedness. From the perspective of Islamic family law, waithood does not contradict Islamic principles as long as it is based on the intention to safeguard public interest (maslahah). The consideration of capability (istitha‗ah) is fundamental, as Islamic law regards marriage as a mitsaqan ghalizan (a solemn covenant) aimed at establishing a family characterized by sakinah (tranquility), mawaddah (affection), and rahmah (compassion). The flexibility of marital rulings in Islamic jurisprudence— which may vary according to individual circumstances—demonstrates that postponing marriage due to insufficient economic, psychological, or moral readiness is consistent with the principle of prudence within the framework of maqasid alshariah. Therefore, the phenomenon of waithood among Generation Z at UIN Raden Intan Lampung and Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University can be understood as a contextualized normative and Islamic awareness, not as a deviation, but as an effort to preserve the quality and sustainability of family life in accordance with the objectives of Islamic family law.
