Abstract

ABSTRACT Code switching is a common phenomenon in bilingual and multilingual communities, particularly among individuals who frequently interact with speakers from different linguistic backgrounds. In multilingual settings, speakers often alternate between languages to express ideas, emotions, and social identities more effectively. This phenomenon is clearly portrayed in Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens movie, which depicts the lives of Indonesian immigrants living in New York City. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and analyze the types of code switching used by the main characters in the movie based on Hoffman’s (1991) theory. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of utterances containing code switching produced by the main characters in Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens movie. The data were collected through observation and documentation techniques by watching the movie, identifying code-switching utterances, transcribing the data, and classifying them according to Hoffman’s (1991) theory. The data were then analyzed descriptively to determine the types of code switching used by the characters. The findings revealed that there were 34 utterances containing code switching. Three types of code switching proposed by Hoffman (1991) were identified, namely intra-sentential switching, intersentential switching, and tag switching. Intra-sentential switching was the most dominant type with 13 occurrences (38,23%), followed by inter-sentential switching with 14 occurrences (41.18%), and tag switching with 7 occurrences (20,58%).
