Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English learning; however, many eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Tanggamus experienced difficulties in identifying main ideas, understanding contextual vocabulary, and making inferences from English texts. This study aimed to investigate the influence of Dialogue Mastery on students’ English reading comprehension. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasiexperimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The population consisted of 130 eleventh-grade students of MAN 1 Tanggamus. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling and comprised two classes: XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and XI IPS 2 as the control class, with 35 students in each class. The experimental class received instruction through Dialogue Mastery, while the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests and analyzed using validity and reliability testing, normality and homogeneity tests, and an independent sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS version 24.0. The results showed that students in the experimental class achieved higher improvement than those in the control class. The mean score of the experimental class increased from 62.90 on the pretest to 82.07 on the post-test, whereas the control class improved from 62.87 to 65.47. The hypothesis testing revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that Dialogue Mastery had a significant positive influence on students’ reading comprehension, particularly in identifying main ideas, understanding contextual vocabulary, and making inferences.In conclusion, Dialogue Mastery can be used as an effective instructional strategy to improve English reading comprehension among eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Tanggamus.
