Abstract
Abstract This study analyzes how Asghar Ali Engineer interprets Quranic verses on inheritance and examines their relevance to gender justice in modern contexts. Using a library-based qualitative method, the research draws on Engineer's writings as the primary source, compared with classical and contemporary Quranic commentary (tafsir). Engineer applies a social hermeneutics framework, reading the inheritance verses as a response to 7th-century Arabian social conditions. He argues that the 2:1 ratio between male and female shares is contextbound and adjustable as women's economic roles evolve. However, this study identifies a fundamental flaw in Engineer's approach: he isolates the inheritance verses from the broader Islamic family economic system, overlooking the principle of inter-verse coherence (munasabah al-ayat). In conclusion, justice in Islamic inheritance is not measured by arithmetic equality, but by the balance between rights and obligations assigned to each party. The proper solution to inheritance injustice lies in education about the complete Islamic family system, not in revising the established provisions of the Quran. This study emphasizes that the interpretation of inheritance verses must be conducted comprehensively by considering the interconnection between Qur’anic verses so that the concept of justice in Islam can be understood holistically and proportionally. Keywords: Islamic inheritance, gender justice, social hermeneutics, Asghar Ali Engineer.
