Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is one of the essential language skills that students must master in learning English, particularly in writing procedure texts. However, many students face difficulties in organizing ideas, understanding generic structures, and applying appropriate language features in writing. These problems are often caused by the lack of engaging learning strategy and limited student involvement in the classroom.Card Sort is considered an effective instructional strategy that helps students actively organize ideas and understand text structure. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of card sort toward students’ writing skill in procedure text at the tenth grade of MA Al-Hikmah in the academic year of 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative method with a quasiexperimental design using a pre-test and post-test of control and experimental groups. The population consisted of tenth-grade students of MA Al-Hikmah, with two classes selected as samples: an experimental class taught using card sort and a control class taught using Task-Based Learning. The data were collected through writing tests in the form of pre-test and post-test. The instrument was validated and analyzed using SPSS. Data analysis included normality testing using Shapiro–Wilk, homogeneity testing using Levene’s Test, and hypothesis testing using an Independent Sample t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The findings showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The mean post-test score of the experimental class (78.84) was higher than that of the control class (74.67). The result of the Independent Sample t-test indicated a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than α = 0.05. This result means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the used of Card Sort has a significant influence on improving students’ writing skill in procedure text. Card sort helps students understand the generic structure of procedure texts, organize ideas more systematically, and increases students’ active participation in the learning process.
