Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the violations of Grice‟s Cooperative Principle in The Mata Najwa‟s Exclusive Interview with Chris Martin of Coldplay. This research aims to identify the types of maxim violations, determine the most dominant maxim violated, and explore the underlying reasons for these violations in cross-cultural media interactions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from a 23-minute video of The Mata Najwa Show featuring Chris Martin, downloaded from YouTube. The researcher acted as the primary instrument, supported by an analytical rubric based on Grice‟s theory and validated by experts. The data analysis involved transcription, identification, classification, and interpretation of maxim violations based on the four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. The findings revealed that all four maxims were violated in the interaction. The most frequently violated maxim was the Maxim of Quantity, followed by the Maxims of Relation, Manner, and Quality. These violations occurred due to cultural differences, the need to maintain politeness and face, and the intention to create humor and engagement. The results indicate that such violations do not necessarily hinder communication but instead enrich the pragmatic dynamics of talk shows, particularly in cross-cultural and public discourse contexts. This study offers pedagogical implications for English education by providing authentic examples of maxim violations in real-life communication. The findings can be used to enhance students‟ pragmatic competence, particularly in interpreting implied meaning and managing cross-cultural communication. Furthermore, teachers can implement these findings through classroom activities such as discourse analysis, role-play, and mediabased learning.
