Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to know the types of figurative language and types of conversational implicature seen in the script of movie Turning Red. In this research, the researcher used Leech’s (1969) theory as the main framework to analyze and identify the types of figurative language and the theory by Levinson’s (1983) to analyze conversational implicatures. This research is using descriptive qualitative method. The data source was taken from the Turning Red movie script as the primary source and also from journal article, thesis, and books. Documentation technique is used in this study to collect the data research. The documentation is used because the data sources are available, the analysis can be structured, and it is rich in information. Also, the researcher used content analysis technique with the theory of interactive model by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014) in this research to analyzing the data. The result of this research based on an analysis of 10 types of figurative language: periphrasis, paradox, synecdoche, metaphor, metonymy, simile, symbolism, hyperbole, irony, and apostrophe. It was found that 51 data of figurative languages were discovered by researcher in the movie scripts Turning Red, they are 2 data periphrasis (3.92%), 2 data paradox (3.92%), 3 data synecdoche (5.88%), 20 data metaphor (39.22%), 1 metonymy (1.96%), 4 simile (7.84%), 2 symbolism (3.92%), 10 hyperbole (19.61%), 3 irony (5.88%), 4 apostrophe (7.84%). Metaphor is the most dominant types and followed by hyperbole as the second most common type. Meanwhile, metonymy is the least common. Additionally, from 51 data of figurative language found previously, only 13 data were found to contain conversational implicatures: 10 were identified as particularized conversational implicatures (PCI) and 3 data identified as general conversational implicatures (GCI).
