Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzed the listening comprehension difficulties faced by eighth-grade EFL students. The research employed a qualitative approach through preliminary classroom observation and semi-structured interviews with students at SMPN 36 Bandar Lampung to identify specific areas of difficulty in understanding listening comprehension. The study identified four primary categories of listening comprehension difficulties faced by eighth-grade EFL students at SMPN 36 Bandar Lampung: linguistic processing difficulties (unfamiliar vocabulary, complex sentence structures, pronunciation issues), cognitive processing difficulties (memory overload, sequential information processing challenges, limited strategic awareness), environmental and technical difficulties (poor audio quality, classroom noise, equipment problems), and motivational and affective difficulties (performance anxiety, varying confidence levels, fear of making mistakes). These difficulties were caused by internal factors including limited linguistic competence, cognitive processing constraints, and affective barriers, as well as external factors encompassing technical and acoustic challenges, environmental context issues, and instructional limitations. The findings revealed that listening comprehension obstacles are multifaceted and interconnected, affecting students across all proficiency levels and requiring comprehensive pedagogical approaches that address multiple dimensions simultaneously rather than focusing on isolated skill components.
