Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the political career of Maria Ullfah from 1934 to 1947 within the context of the Indonesian women’s emancipation movement. Using historical research methods, this study highlights the influence of family background and education on the formation of Maria Ullfah’s political consciousness. Born into an educated priyayi family, she had broad access to education and later pursued legal studies at Leiden University. Her intellectual environment, experiences witnessing injustice against women, and interactions with nationalist figures such as Sutan Sjahrir shaped her social awareness and nationalist consciousness. After returning to Indonesia, Maria became active in women’s organizations, the Indonesian Women’s Congress, KOWANI, educational activities, and literacy eradication programs. During the revolutionary period, she served as a member of BPUPKI and became the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Social Affairs in Indonesia. This study emphasizes that family background, education, and personal experiences played significant roles in shaping Maria Ullfah as a central figure in the struggle for women’s emancipation.
