Abstract
Abstract: This study discusses the interpretation of Q.S. Al-Maidah verses 20–23 using the tafsir taḥlili approach, using Tafsir Al-Maraghi as the primary reference. The focus of this research is to reflect on the content of the verses in relation to human rights violations during the Israeli military aggression against Palestine. These verses recount God's command to the Children of Israel to enter the Promised Land (al-arḍ al-muqaddasah), which they refused due to fear of a people they perceived as powerful. Tafsir Al-Maraghi emphasizes that their failure was not due to the strength of the enemy, but rather to their weak faith, lack of courage, and disobedience. This study employs a qualitative method based on literature review to examine the correlation between the message of the verses and contemporary contexts. The findings indicate that God's promise regarding the Holy Land is conditional it is not granted solely based on lineage, but must be accompanied by obedience and justice. Therefore, Israel’s unilateral claim over Palestine under the pretext of ancestral inheritance lacks theological legitimacy. This interpretation serves not only as a historical mirror but also as an ethical proposition for Muslims to side with justice and defend the oppressed. This study affirms the importance of reading the Qur’an as a source of social liberation and universal justice. Keywords: Al-Maidah 20-23, Human Rights, Israel, Palestine, Tafsir al-Maraghi.
