Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PERFORMANCE OF EIGHTH GRADE AT MTS RIYADH EL ILMI BY INDANA SALSABILA This study aims to analyze students’ speaking skills by focusing on five key components: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. The research was conducted with eighth-grade students of MTs Riyadh El Ilmi to gain a deeper understanding of their speaking performance in English. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in this study. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and video recordings of students’ speaking activities. To ensure the validity and reliability of the assessment, two raters were involved in evaluating the students’ speaking performance based on the five components. The findings revealed that the students’ speaking skills were generally classified as moderate to low. Fluency obtained the highest average score, while comprehension was the lowest. Several factors contributed to these results, including students’ shyness, fear of making mistakes, frequent use of their mother tongue, limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, having little to say, and low participation. These findings indicate the importance of greater attention from teachers and schools to improve students’ speaking comprehension and to strengthen other speaking components, particularly grammar and vocabulary.
