Abstract

ABSTRACT Listening skill is one of the fundamental language skills that plays a crucial role in English learning, especially for junior high school students. However, many students still experience difficulties in understanding spoken English due to limited vocabulary, lack of focus, and ineffective learning strategies. This research was conducted to determine whether the Spot Dictogloss technique can improve students’ listening ability of ninth-grade students at Junior High School PGRI 01 Bumi Agung. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, conducted collaboratively by the researcher and the English teacher. Classroom Action Research emphasizes reflective practice through systematic cycles to improve the quality of teaching and learning processes. The CAR model proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart was applied, consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research was implemented in two cycles. Data were collected through listening tests, observation sheets, and field notes to evaluate students’ progress and classroom engagement. In the pre-test, students’ listening ability was relatively low, with only 31% of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion. After the implementation of the Spot Dictogloss technique in Cycle 1 and improvements in instructional strategies in Cycle 2, students showed significant progress. The post-test results revealed that 82% of students achieved mastery, indicating a substantial improvement in listening comprehension. The findings demonstrate that the Spot Dictogloss technique effectively enhanced students’ listening ability by encouraging them to focus on main ideas, identify key information, and reconstruct texts collaboratively. In addition, students became more active, confident, and motivated during the learning process. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Spot Dictogloss technique is an effective and beneficial method for improving students’ listening skills in English learning contexts.
