Abstract
Abstract This qualitative study investigated the challenges faced by final semester student’s at Cendana Putri 1 Boarding House in achieving proficiency in the listening comprehension section of the TOEFL test, a crucial requirement for graduation. Data were collected Through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with six participants, to explore their experiences and perceptions of listening difficulties. The results highlight several key challenges: limited vocabulary, the rapid pace of speech, diverse speaker’s accents, and difficulties in comprehending complex sentence structures. Contributing factors include insufficient exposure to authentic. English listening materials, high levels of test anxiety, low self-confidence, and a lack of effective listening strategies. The study revealed that students struggled most with understanding nuanced vocabulary and adopting to accent variability in accents encountered in the listening tasks. Moreover, the research demonstrated a significant correlation between test anxiety and reduced performance. These findings offer valuable insight for students and educational institutions, providing a basis for developing targeted interventions aimed at improving students listening comprehension skills and ultimately, their TOEFL performance.
