Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates the use of borrowing words in the Indonesian translation of the crime fiction novel The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling). Borrowing, as a translation technique, involves transferring words directly from the Source Language (SL) to the Target Language (TL), either in pure form (imposition) or in a naturalized form (adoption) adapted to TL norms. The study aims to: (1) identify and categorize the types of borrowing words, (2) assess their level of naturalness and acceptability within the target text, and (3) explore the sociocultural factors influencing their adoption and their correlation with literature education. Employing a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis, the research analyzes 275 lexical items from ten chapters of the novel and its Indonesian translation, Ulat Sutra. Data were classified as Pure/Imposition or Naturalized/Adoption borrowing and evaluated using established parameters for acceptability (Nababan) and naturalness (adapted from Larson). The finding reveal a distinct translational strategy: Naturalized Borrowing is the dominant technique, constituting 73.45% of the data (e.g., client → klien, investigation → investigasi). In contrast, Pure Borrowing (26.55%), used for culture-specific terms (pound, flat), globalized lexemes (email, internet), and highly specific terminology (roman à clef), scored lower in both acceptability (2) and naturalness (3), marking them as functionally comprehensible but perceptibly foreign. The analysis demonstrates a strong empirical correlation: naturalization is the primary pathway to achieving a natural and acceptable translation
