Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the influence of teaching vocabulary by using the Ball Catch Game (BCG) on elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), especially for young learners who require engaging and interactive learning techniques. Traditional teaching techniques often result in low motivation and limited vocabulary retention; therefore, this study implemented the Ball Catch Game as an alternative gamebased learning technique to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. This research employed a pre-experimental design using a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The population and sample consisted of 24 5th grade of SDN 02 Rejosari, Kotabumi, North Lampung, selected through saturation sampling. The research instrument was a vocabulary test comprising 20 multiple-choice items focusing on nouns and adjectives. Data were collected through pre-test and posttest administrations and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis, including normality testing, homogeneity testing, and paired sample t-test. The results indicated an improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the implementation of the Ball Catch Game. The findings showed a significant difference between students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. These results suggest that teaching vocabulary by using the Ball Catch Game has a positive influence on elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the Ball Catch Game can be considered an effective and enjoyable teaching technique for improving vocabulary mastery in elementary EFL classrooms.
